Virtual Gaming and Virtual Game Night

We’ve been using a variety of apps and web sites to play games virtually during the COVID-19 crisis. We can hear each others’ voices and see each others’ faces and have fun playing games while still maintaining social distancing from the safety of our homes. It’s not exactly the same as playing together in person, but it’s a close second. We’d love for you to join us!

Feel free to join us whenever is convenient for you during the specified time block. We’ll work you into a game as soon as we can.

  • Wednesdays 5 pm to 8:30 pm
  • Saturdays 1 pm to 7 pm
  • Next Virtual Game Night: Saturday, August 1, 2pm until midnight or everyone goes to bed
How It Works

We gather on our Discord server (set up specially for the occasion by Brent). See the next section for instructions on how to join us.

When you login to our Discord server, go to the looking-for-game text and voice channels to see who’s in attendance and what we’re playing. If no one’s present, check the latest messages and voice channels to see what we’re playing and where. Feel free to jump in on any conversation to let us know you’ve arrived. That way we can make sure to include you in the next game.

From Discord, we break out into groups to play games via Board Game Arena, Yucata, Boitajeux, Web Ex video conference and Tabletop Simulator. A few players – Tim (tvar), Tina (tgmcduff), Robyn (rrtatu) and Brent (AllHailKngTorg) – are set up to facilitate and host games. Whenever you finish a game, go back to the Discord looking-for-game channels and chat with others to decide on another game to play.

We’ve been hosting games virtually for awhile now and have become old hands at it. The variety of games we can play keeps expanding as we explore new venues and technologies. Below are instructions for how to join us, details for each venue, and any files you need for the games played via Web Ex video conferencing.

We play more involved games like Stone Age, Tzolk’in, and Carcassonne on Board Game Arena, Yucata and Boiteajeux while using our Discord voice channels – named after our game rooms – to chat with each other while playing. It works really well! Recently, Discord added a video chat option, too!

There’s no charge to join us for Virtual Gaming. We’d of course appreciate it if you bought games from us, though. Our online store is open 24/7 and our brick and mortar store is open again, too.

How to Join Us for Virtual Gaming

To join in the fun, please do the following now, before the next gaming session, so you’ll be all setup and ready to go when the gaming begins:

  1. Join our Discord server: HBBnGVirtualGaming.
  2. Sign up for a free account on Board Game Arena.
  3. Post a message on our Discord server (in the #general channel) introducing yourself with your real name and your Board Game Arena username.

You may also want to sign up for accounts on the following services as well to have access to a wider of variety of games you can play with us:

  1. Yucata. Yucata will send you a confirmation email you’ll have to open and click on to confirm your account before they’ll give you access to their server. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the email to go through.
  2. Boiteajeux
  3. Web Ex by Cisco app. See details in the Web Ex section below.

Feel free to call Tina at (843) 695-1498 if you need assistance or want to do a test run before our next Virtual Gaming session.

On game day/night, open the Discord app and visit the looking-for-game text and voice channels on our Discord server.

Castles of Burgundy: The Dice Game Scoresheets

If you want to play one of the Spymasters, get the free Codenames Gadget app for iOS or Android.

The first Spymaster will choose a Random grid, note the number and relay it to the second Spymaster. The second Spymaster enters that number on their app so they can both see the same grid.
